Welder Qualification & Certification Testing in Reno & Northern Nevada

Jones Weldco administers and witnesses welder performance qualification tests at your shop or job site, so your welders are qualified before they weld on production work. Every test is witnessed by an AWS Certified Welding Inspector who spent 4 years as a working welder and sits on the AWS D1 Structural Welding Committee.

What we test

Codes: AWS D1.1 (structural steel), D1.3 (sheet steel), D1.4 (reinforcing steel), D1.6 (stainless steel), D1.8 (seismic) and ASME Section IX.

Plate, pipe and fillet tests in the positions your production work needs, from 1G through 6G.

Processes: SMAW, FCAW, GMAW and GTAW.

Visual examination of every coupon, then bend testing or radiographic testing as the code allows.

How it works

1. Tell us the code, process, positions and thickness range you need, and send the WPS your welders will test to.

2. We confirm the test plan so the qualification covers your real production work, not just the easiest plate.

3. Welders test at your shop or job site with the CWI witnessing fit-up, welding and the finished coupon.

4. Coupons are visually examined, then bend tested or sent for RT.

5. You get signed Welder Qualification Test Records (WQTRs) for your files and project submittals.

Keeping qualifications current

Under AWS D1.1 and ASME Section IX, a welder's qualification lapses if they go more than six months without welding in that process. We set up continuity logs so your records hold up when the special inspector, engineer or owner asks for them.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between welder qualification and AWS Certified Welder?

Code qualification (AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX) is done by or for the employer and documents that a welder can make sound welds to a specific WPS. The AWS Certified Welder program is a national certification tested at AWS Accredited Test Facilities. Most structural and fabrication work requires code qualification; some owners also ask for AWS certification.

Which test position should my welders take?

The position and thickness tested set the limits of what they can weld in production. We match the test to your work so you're not requalifying welders later.

How long does a welder qualification last?

It stays in effect as long as the welder keeps using the process. A gap of more than six months, or a specific reason to question their work, requires requalification.

Can you test at our shop?

Yes. We test at your shop or job site anywhere in northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe area.

Do you also write the WPS?

Yes. We develop and qualify WPSs and PQRs, so the procedure and the welder qualifications line up.
