Special Inspection Services in Reno & Northern Nevada

When your permit calls for special inspections, the building official needs a qualified, independent inspector on site at the right milestones, with reports that hold up at final. Jones Weldco provides IBC Chapter 17 special inspection for structural steel, structural welding and high-strength bolting across Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Douglas and Lyon Counties, Fallon, Lake Tahoe and Truckee.

What we inspect

Structural steel: material verification, member and connection conformance to the approved drawings, and anchor rod and embed checks (ICC S1).

Structural welding: welder and WPS verification, fit-up, in-process and final visual inspection to AWS D1.1, D1.3, D1.4 and D1.8 as specified (ICC S2, AWS CWI).

High-strength bolting: pre-installation verification in a bolt tension calibrator, snug-tight and pretensioned joint inspection, and turn-of-nut, TC bolt and DTI verification per the RCSC Specification (ICC S1).

Supporting materials testing: concrete and grout sampling, soils sampling and compaction testing, and NDE (UT, MT, PT) where the Statement of Special Inspections requires it.

How it works

1. Send the Statement of Special Inspections (or the structural sheets) and your schedule.

2. We confirm scope and submit qualifications to the building department. Reno and Washoe County both approve special inspectors before work starts.

3. Inspections happen at the milestones you call in, continuous or periodic as the code and plans require.

4. Daily reports go out the same day. Nonconformances are documented and tracked to closure.

5. A final letter goes to the building official when the work is complete and accepted.

Who hires the special inspector

Under IBC Section 1704.2, the owner or the owner's authorized agent employs the special inspector, not the contractor performing the work. We work for owners, developers, architects and engineers, and coordinate directly with the GC and fabricator to keep inspections from holding up the schedule.

Frequently asked questions

What is special inspection?

Inspection required by IBC Chapter 17 on top of the building department's regular inspections, for work where quality is critical to structural safety, like structural welding and high-strength bolting. It's performed by a qualified inspector approved by the building official.

Does my project need special inspection?

If the structural drawings include a Statement of Special Inspections, yes. It lists each item that needs inspection and whether it's continuous or periodic.

Who pays for special inspection?

The owner or the owner's agent hires and pays the special inspector (IBC 1704.2). The contractor doing the work can't hire their own special inspector.

What's the difference between continuous and periodic special inspection?

Continuous means the inspector is present the whole time the work is being done. Periodic means the inspector checks the work at set stages or intervals. The Statement of Special Inspections specifies which applies to each item.

Which areas do you serve?
